This ties in well with the idea that a voltage wave is fully reflected by an open termination. The current travelling back down the line on the other hand may be seen as the superposition of the incident current and a reflected current of the same amplitude and opposite polarity which add up to zero! This ties in well with the intuitive idea that, as carriers reach a dead-end they travel back in the opposite direction towards the generator.
