It is interesting to see the change in price over time for different packaging styles. As an example, the SRA-1, a through-hole (plugin) mounted mixer was released in 1972, and for many years cost $1.95, the SRA-1+ now costs $20.95. A similar performance surface mount mixer, ADE- 1, was more expensive initially and now costs $3.75. (All these prices are in $USA and per mixer for 100 units). Because surface-mount packages are used in the vast majority of new designs, the cost of plugin packages is increasing and the cost of surface-mount packages is decreasing.
